A House Portrait from Mountainside, New Jersey

by Jennifer Skopp

Jennifer Skopp painted this Watercolor House Portrait of a home in Mountainside, New Jersey, for two realtors to give to their client as a closing gift. Jennifer thought the name of this town is appropriate because the two homes that were the subjects of her House Portraits, were up on a hill.

This Mountainside white house has two floors. The light gray pitched roof has a dormer with three windows on the front of the house. That area is the top floor. The front door and shutters are black. The bottom floor has a bay window on the left side and regular window on the right. The bottom level windows are taller than the upper level ones. Four stairs made of brick, lead to the front door. The chimney on the left is also made of brick.

What’s characteristic about these Mountainside homes is that to enter, you come from the driveway, which is on the side of the house and then take a few very long steps to get to the front door. The steps are running parallel to the house. For this house the driveway is on the right side.

The garden borders the front of the house. Jennifer added colorful flowers to the House Portrait. The walkway or long steps that lead from the driveway to the front door, is flanked by flowers, shrubs and bushes. On the left side are large stones with cool colored green plants growing in between the stones. Jennifer thought that it looks rugged, but elegant.

There are tall trees behind the house that Jennifer included in the House Portrait.
