A House Portrait from Bradley Beach, New Jersey

by Jennifer Skopp

A couple bought this house in Bradley Beach, New Jersey. It’s two blocks from the beach and walking distance to Asbury Park. They are big music fans and go to concerts several times a week. It was very exciting for them to move into this house and commissioned Jennifer Skopp to paint a Watercolor House Portrait of it.

This home by the beach, is two floors and has light bluish-gray siding. There are two pitched roofs with shingles that have touches of gray, yellow ochre, and brick red. The top floor is underneath the pitched roofs. There is a dormer window coming out of the right side of the roof. The house is on the corner and has a white picket fence. The red brick chimney is on the outside of the right side of the house. The covered porch on the corner of the house, has a white railing.

Hanging plants with red flowers are growing from window boxes that are placed on the front railing of the porch. There is a shallow lawn that wraps around the front and side of this home. Two tall bushes are in the side yard in front of the chimney. There is a flag with a sunflower design and it’s attached to the front railing of the porch.

Jennifer wanted the House Portrait to look like the home on a sunny day. She used the color, French Ultramarine, to paint the shadows. Since Jennifer chose to draw the house from a two-point perspective, it has a more exciting shape, rather than just showing the front view. She used playful shapes to paint the sidewalk, trees in the background, clouds and sky, to compliment the shape of the house.
