A House Portrait from Clark, New Jersey

by Jennifer Skopp

A real estate agent asked Jennifer Skopp to create this Watercolor House Portrait as a gift for his client, who is the seller of this Clark, New Jersey home.

The house is one level. It has a reddish-brown pyramid style roof. The siding is beige. The wooden, medium brown front door has a vertical stained-glass window.  Two white light fixtures are on either side of the door. There are two bay windows. Each one consists of three windows. They are located on each side of the main entrance. There are three stone steps that have two white wrought iron railings, that lead to the front door.

Part of the left side of the house is further back. There is a tall window that consists of three more narrow windows. To the left of the recessed section of the house is the garage and the driveway. The garage has a white door and a reddish-brown pitched roof that is connected to the roof of the house. The red brick chimney is located on the left side of the main section of the house. The path to the front door starts from the driveway on the left, runs parallel to the house and then curves to the front steps.

The house is beautifully landscaped. There are plants with pink flowers, and a wide variety of shrubs and bushes on each side of the front door. The garden on the right side continues quite a few feet beyond the end of the house. There is another long, narrow garden on the left side of the lawn. In the middle, there is a white brick rectangular structure with a white light fixture on top.

Jennifer decided to show the front of this Clarke, New Jersey house, but placed it on a diagonal. She painted the shadows blue and gave the Watercolor House Portrait a playful shape. The outline of the bottom and top of the painting has large curves. Some clouds and trees continue past where the sky ends. Jennifer enjoyed painting the gardens because there was such a variety of greens and different textures.
