A House Portrait from New Milford, Connecticut
by Jennifer Skopp
A woman contacted Jennifer to create a watercolor house portrait of her husband’s grandmother’s New Milford, Connecticut house. He had very fond memories of this house and she was giving this to her husband for Christmas.
This white house has a covered porch that wraps around the front and sides of it. There are two gray pitched roofs. The top part of the house, above the second-floor windows, has white circular tiles and the rest of the house has regular white siding.
The client wanted everything just right and participated a lot in the creative process. Her husband’s grandmother used to feed the neighborhood cats, so Jennifer painted several of them perched on the porch and roof. She also painted one cat chasing another on the lawn. In one of the old photos, Jennifer saw an old milk jug in the backyard, but painted it on the front porch. Flowers line the width of the lawn closest to the house.
Two paths lead to the house from the street on each side of the house. There are two steps on each side to go up to the porch. The client decided that the surrounding trees would look like this scene took place in Autumn.
