A House Portrait from Staatsburg, New York

by Jennifer Skopp

Jennifer was commissioned to create this watercolor house portrait for a Christmas gift. This job shows that if the client is emotionally invested in the house, they are much more involved in the creative process. One of the main things Jennifer’s client wanted to emphasize was that for many generations, when a child came to visit, the first and last thing they wanted to do was to take a ride on the swing, that was attached to the big tree.

This Staatsburg, New York home has two floors. The siding is white and the shutters are red. The pitched roof is gray. There is a porch in the front and another one in the back. Flowers and shrubs line the front, back and the side of the house. There are many tall trees surrounding the house. Jennifer’s client wanted to show the child on the swing facing the house. The child and the viewer of this house portrait, have the same point of view.
